I worked chicken farms when I was in high school. We loaded chickens on a flatbed to be sent off to the slaughter house. It was tough work done anywhere from 10:00pm to 5:00 am. Took about 4 hours to load a truck, which worked out to 25,000 cornish hens or 15,000 fryers (something like that). When I finally made it home, I sometimes would sleep like a rock and other times it couldn't sleep at all; kept filling up that truck in my mind. It stunk of ammonia, shit, and diesel. The pay was goo though. We got paid by the truck, which typically took 4 hours to load and we got about $100 each. And that was in the late 80's.
