its known as the Magnus effect. airsoft and BB Guns have these for settings and do the same thing, and it applies to many sports

Yes, that's what they call it, but the bottom line is that air is moving faster over one side than the other because of the combined velocities of translation and rotation, which leads to a difference in pressure, and that's lift. It also happens in golf when you drive a ball with a draw or a fade.
