Is it free now? Last I played there was a free version and Gamespy BF2 profile tracking was replaced with a fan created service.

It's not free, but you can find a free copy, lol. But it's alive due to bf2hub and several servers in normal mode and night ops

a few friends were trying to play bf2 a couple weekends ago, is it even possible to active the game if you still own the original physical copy?

Don't even need the physical copy anymore, one of the BF2 clans has an installer (might have to be logged in to see this link though):

Here's a better idea, donate enough to spin up a dedicated night ops server and don't fuck with BZ1.

BF2: Project Reality is free to download. You don't need Origin or any key. It is only Project Reality though. You can't play vanilla BF2 with it.

They just released brand new content nearly 20 years after its release. Pretty incredible IMO.

Holy moly they have a map called Saaremaa. Never thought I'd see a local neighbourhood in any game let alone Battlefield. I know it is probably just a renamed BF2 classic map though.

They have a fuckton of maps, factions, and time periods, including Vietnam, WWII, Falklands, etc. They try to make the maps based on actual map data.

It's worth looking into if you've never played it.
