Since you deployed countermeasures, it basically voids your uncap protection since you're technically engaging in combat. Plus with the amount of time it took to confirm who it was that killed you, it could've been several different people who shot at you with guided missiles of various types.

Do you have any advice for next time? Should I switch to spectator and record the perp doing it to others, as a better evidence package?
Nah the best thing to do is just take the heat basically. Don't do anything while in uncap if you know someone is attacking it unprovoked and you still have that immunity (assuming you also have flags). By doing that, you can at least confirm that whoever is attacking did in fact violate the rule as long as you don't engage in any way (i.e. use equipment/countermeasures, shoot, or leave uncap).
