BF2 artillery was lit, and an extra objective to disable. Could also disable enemy recon stations.
More objectives than just capturing flags = more fun.
My objective is rarely to capture flags, even in BF4. My objective is to dismantle the enemy team so they cannot fight my teammates while they capture flags

Or, how you can do in some specific maps, Zavod por example: the mobile artillery.
It's a powerful tool that can help disable mainly the enemy AA, but also other enemy armored vehicles, helping your team progress better.
I love the rocket truck. Unfortunately it's usually occupied by an idiot who just sprays the thing at infantry. That idiot is only sometimes me. Most of the time when I get in it I get blown up 30 seconds later by some fucktard driving around on an ATV with c4.

Desert Combat had the scud missile. Man that thing was awesome. It might sound lame, but it wasn't. Unlike BF4's commander's missile, the scud did in fact kill everything in and around a flag.
Desert Combat was great. I remember getting in the C130 for the first time and just cruising around El Alamein dropping dudes on flags.
When they introduced nuke, it usually made servers crash, once dropped.

Using scans, and Uavs you could properly give intel to your team.

Shit, reading this page I just remembered in BF2 when you used the repair kit the guy used a wrench instead of a torch. And it made a ratcheting sound, too.
BF2 had alot of the guys from desert combat helping them, which I believe was one of the reasons bf2 was so good.
