built a rig for someones grand kid....1200 budget to build something for first person shooters with the kid having a PS5, TV and good gaming headset at the start....TV is 4k at 60 frames as all HDMI ports are 2.0 not 2.2....so i say screw it and start with a monitor...got lucky finding a LG 32inch 1080p 165hz Gsync monitor on sale for 150ish on black friday....so i went from there...not wanting a mining card i bought new when a 3060 12gb popped up for $310 on sale and knew it do well at 1080p when the kid wanted fartlite and chicken dinners....
now the debate....AMD am4 VS am5 VS intel 10th gen on sale VS even 12th gen....ended up going with a 5600 none X on a AM4 ASrock B550 riptide motherboard....thinking about it the kid is 12 years old, shit is not cheap right now and blowing the budget on a CPU he will need to upgrade about the time the GPU sucks is not worth it.....so 5600 none X with my left over wrath cooler from my 3700x is the key....plus no over priced DDR5 to buy....
then thinking about storage and budget i got lucky with 2 512gb sata based SSD drives and a 1tb M.2 gen3 with the sata drives being 25 dollars and the M.2 hitting 46 bucks.....a single 1tb gen 4 would have cost more then what i spent total and i could only get 1 of the 1tb M.2s for 46.....T-force makes good cheap drives and i have had a set for almost 4 years with no issues
he said he wanted a white case with LEDs in it....found a great case with 3 140mm and 3 120mm fans already in it with LEDs for 60 bucks on sale with good ratings....case looks great with good fit and finish but its really thin metal and no longer in production.....
kid has no keyboard or mouse....found logitech G502 hero for 33 bucks again all on black friday and then found the Mechanical Eagle z77 keyboard with blue switches for 23 dollars on sale!!!
then the sage starts.....at this point its 2 weeks to Xmas, every part is here and the only thing i am waiting on is the part listed as shipping first.....the fucking PSU.......a gold EVGA 750 watt PSU that was a 120 dollar unit on sale for 55 bucks....it came with a broken fan, bitch sounded like it was grinding coffee beans on first boot....EVGA makes good units and the dam thing showed perfect voltages.....EVGA box looked great...outer shipping box looked like it was in the middle of the world cup games as a ball....so i said fuck it....pulled out my spare corsair 650watt PSU and get it running.....i set up return of the EVGA, get it boxed up and shipped off only to be told 5 days before Xmas they are sold out with no replacement.....here is a refund....well fuck me.....5 days before Xmas FUCK.....i had my corsair to save the day.....then 6 hours in to fucking with the PC in a good running state the corsair PSU shits out and will not stay on......new PSU ordered wont hit the house till the 28th....buy this time the kid is in Colorado and wont be home until 1/9/23.....
with all of this going on my 4 year old AOC 32 inch 1440p monitor takes a shit....sent it off for warranty repair and they could not fix it so i ended up with a 300 dollar check to buy new....find a good refurbed 32inch LG 1440p 165hz with Gsync for 200 and ended up getting it here before i lost use of the kids monitor.....kid loves the PC and even moved the PS5 over to the monitor to run 1080 at 120hz.....
