Without (hopefully) getting overly political, here is a link to a news story and a link to talk show segment that reveal quite a bit about the media and their intent.
Here is a link to the article. If you're not interested in reading it and simply want the high points, here you go: Michael Cieply is a former movie editor from the NYT. He has worked for several other media companies as well. According to Cieply, "narratives" were developed up to a year in advance and then try to find stories to match the narrative. He quotes other editors from the NYT as saying “We set the agenda for the country in that room”.
Here is the link to the video. Conservative writer, Charles Cooke, takes on several liberal commentators about gun control. The two interesting takeaways are that Cooke's point is simply that nobody has presented any ideas that would actually have an effect on gun violence. And while Cooke is generally opposed to gun control, he never suggests that gun control is a bad idea. The liberals on the panel appear to lose their minds and throughout the clip they cannot respond to Cooke in a meaningful way. Mark Halperin then responds to Cooke and says "...everyone in the country in a leadership position: journalism, politics, etc, should...". I found that comment remarkable and it says a lot about how "journalists" see themselves.
