Thoughts on "KYS" or "Kill Yourself" used in chat

So, let me begin by saying that i dont want to "police language" anywhere, let alone in a game where we're all supposed to be having fun.

That being said - Do you think it is appropriate for someone to type "KYS" or "Kill Yourself" in game? I've seen it a few times (not often, thankfully) and just thought it was some douchebag kid popping off at the mouth. BUT - I dont think it's cool to say that, even in jest. Just doesnt go along with typical banter in game.

Would BZ staff consider perhaps a warning or mute "timeout" for someone typing that? I mean, if you say the name of my second favorite restaurant (CRACKER BARREL) you get a timeout. I just think that it may reign in the dumbfuckery of people in chat.

What say you, good people of Banzoria?

EDIT- favorite restaurant is Waffle House

How will that lil lady boy man seasonally ever convey their feelies, though? :D
i mean, thats just being a dick. InGame chat was designed for shit talk, but that may be considered a lil over the top. I dunno. I just think its not good sportsmanship. Trash talk and MF others all you like, but that just gets too personal if you feel me playa....

You're saying you don't want to police language and then go on to advocate for the policing of language. That's like saying you're not racist but support the restriction of voting rights based on a person's race. You're doing the exact thing you say you're not doing.

You say that people should stick to "typical banter in game" but how is this different from any other type of insulting command? Is typing "kill yourself" any different from "go fuck yourself"? The only difference I can see is when one chooses to interpret them literally, otherwise they are both dismissive "nothing" statements that convey little information and serve only to fill the conversational void of someone compulsively seeking to have the last word.

In my opinion this is one of the least offensive kinds of trash talk, and this is coming from someone who has harbored suicidal thoughts in the past and continues to struggle with depression. It's such a low-effort statement that it doesn't even register to me. At least commenting on someone's skill-level, or their physical attributes requires some amount of effort to be effective. Just ignore them and move on.

I get what Ed is saying and I feel it too, KYS it’s very strong and not even joking around its funny to say it. I know that most of the regulars are kind of a John Rambo, no feelings, no expression and so on… BUT as humans there are some days or even moments where we’re not feeling okay and there’s some words that trigger certain moods/thoughts.

Please don’t think that it’s like calling someone fat, idiot, faggot or even that certain group of people.

Essentially I don’t give a fuck about and probably I used it in the past 2-3 times when I could barely speak english and had no sense of connection with words but when someone is treating other like shit and telling him “kill yourself” I just can’t tolerate that, we’re here to enjoy the game despite others lame ass gameplay (e.g. CaptainCarnage) and I know that I can be a prick specially playing metro when I’m being part of fucking useless ass team.

I disagree. People are far too concerned with what others say to or about them. I was bullied as a child and it had a profound effect on me that has impacted me to this very day. Had I been less concerned with what people had to say about me then this wouldn't have affected me so tremendously. The mollycoddling that is present in today's society is creating people who can't take criticism in any form and who react with extreme hostility - sometimes even violently so - to any perceived slight. Anyone who is able to be sent over the edge by three little letters in a video game is already a basket case who is going to need a lot more help than the slippery slope of censorship is going to provide them.

If something someone says really bothers you just press H. Better yet, tell them you're gonna fuck their sister or something equally as ridiculous as "kill yourself".

I think you’re missing the point, you’re saying that people are not concerned from your perspective when we all know that perspectives are far from the truth. Most important is that I don’t think this thread is about how everyone feels about sayin “KYS” but how the person that is receiving it’s going to take it. In the chat you have plenty of words that are banned, I could say Nigga, Cracker, Jew or other that from my perspective they are meaningless because I only see them from the outside because they’re not part of my culture.

I don’t care if admins decide to enforce the ban on that word or acronym but I’d like to people have consciousness about that in the future.

I gave my perspective solely to provide context so that people can't claim I don't "get it". What I am offended by or not doesn't matter because the perspective is irrelevant. Everyone has a different one and potentially everything spoken could be considered offensive to someone. Something is always going to offend someone so what is the limit? Why stop at censoring "kys"? Why not censor mom jokes? Surely someone is going to be really offended by them. What about calling people faggots? I'm certain there are gay people who play here who find that term offensive. How about jokes about people with missing fingers, or jokes about cat owners, or penis size, or any other possible thing in the world? Do you see how this is a never ending sequence of banned language? This is why censorship does not work. The limit is always going to be arbitrary and someone is always going to feel marginalized by that limit. If these were my servers I wouldn't even censor racism, not because I am racist or care to use racial epithets but because it's a fruitless endeavor of trying to protect people's feelings.

There is a simple solution to offensive language in this game : press H. My preferred solution is to just yell back at the person offending me.

Okay, to me someone saying "KYS" is on par with the guy whose pickup truck has a Confederate Battle Flag on the tailgate.

It tells me a lot about the person.

Also, I don't want to ban these things because to me it's valuable information to know who would act like this.

I achieved what I wanted to do. I opened a dialogue about a topic I found worthy of discussion.

Also- I never mentioned a "ban", just perhaps a temporary mute.

Obama, I have witnessed people actually do it. Never affected me afterwards (overtly) but I just thought it was not with the nature of the game. It goes beyond "trash talk".

Theres no need to be a cunt about a conversation to those who commented negatively. Apparently your'e not evolved enough to have a conversation.

Thanks for your input.
