Because it still requires you own the base game and dlc from EA. It just replaces the api and backend that EA currently manages with client and server modifications.Why am I just learning about this project now? How is this going to be legal?

EA isn’t onboard technically but because it doesn’t violate their whole eula and they make the money from sales, they should technically ignore it.
EA also should rent servers for all of their Battlefield games as a no-risk way of making money but the one thing EA is good at is avoiding ways to make money. If they weren't so good at it then they would actually attempt to make decent games.
Server rentals on consoles are all handled through EA. Dunno why they never offered this for PC.
